Welcome to our Flowly Features series where we highlight a hero on their health journey so that we can get inspired, pick up a tip or two, and remember that we are not alone 💙
Hi Gabrial! Tell us a little bit about yourself:
Hey, I am Gabrial, an Irish 22 year old living in Belfast. You most likely know me from my TikTok account dedicated to mindfulness and helping people teach their nervous systems to no longer live out of fight or flight. I am passionate about using your mind and breath to heal your body from within.
What has your personal health journey been like?
My health journey started when I was doing my law degree at university. Due to living in stress, my body started shutting down. I had:
- chronic sinusitis
- ulcerative colitis
- skin issues
The doctors had no idea what was wrong with me. However, I knew that my nervous system could no longer handle being in fight or flight 24/7. I put all my energy into healing my nervous system, which healed my body. Now I am the healthiest I have ever been!
What would you tell the past version of yourself when you first began your health journey?
To be patient. You do not have to reject the current version of you to become your best self. Give yourself the time you need to heal and enjoy the journey!
Here at Flowly, we are all about cultivating a flow state. What does a state of flow feel like or look like to you?
I am fully in each experience moment to moment. Whether it’s making content, working, or being with friends or family, I am not distracted by my mind. I am not lost in thought or living in my head. I feel at peace without effort.
When do you feel the most "in flow" in your life?
When I am doing the things I love. Traveling, being in nature, making content, and connecting with my community.
How do you balance taking care of your health on top of everything else in your life?
I am employed and I also work on social media as a side hustle. I would say give yourself time to do nothing to avoid burnout. Always put your health first, as how healthy you are impacts how well you perform. Set aside dedicated time each day for deep work and remove distractions. Just as Alan Watts has said, enjoy what you do and consider everything you do as play instead of ‘work’.
What resources have helped you on your journey?
Mindfulness has been my biggest teacher:
- The Waking Up app and meditations by Sam Harris 📱
- Some of my favourite meditation teachers include Adyashanti and Loch Kelly 🧘
- I also love breathwork, like Wim Hof on YouTube 🌬️
- I also love yoga, my favourite teacher is Sarah Beth on YouTube 💻
- The Huberman Lab podcast is great 🎧
Where can we follow your journey?
My TikTok is @gabrialcherian where all my links will be in my bio📲
