When an investor first recommended Outlive by Peter Attia to me, I rolled my eyes internally. Yet another ‘celebrity doctor’ book proclaiming the latest diet or exercise fad for ‘longevity,’ I thought.
I take back my eye roll.
After combing through Dr. Attia’s impressive science-heavy manifesto on longevity, I came away with a more in-depth and comprehensive perspective on the idea of longevity.
One particular concept resonated with me: the idea of “healthspan”. We often discuss “lifespan,” but really, we want to focus on the idea of “healthspan” which is to not just focus on how long we are living, but rather on the quality of life we are living.
How long can we live free from disability or disease, with optimal physical and mental health?
The answer to that question comes in the form of what Dr. Attia calls “Medicine 3.0.”
Historically, we’ve lived in a Medicine 2.0 system, which is a reactive healthcare system, one that only kicks in when something is acutely wrong. Medicine 2.0 is focused on short-term fixes for the immediate problem. Example? Opioids for the chronic pain crisis.
Medicine 3.0 instead, focuses on these radical shifts:
- A far greater emphasis on prevention than treatment.
- Considers the patient as a unique individual.
- Starting point is the honest assessment, and acceptance, of risk - including the risk of doing nothing.
